How often are you putting yourself first in life? So many things in life demand our time and energy, and can leave you with little or no time to do the things that are important for your health and well being.
Whether it’s work, kids, family or friends, we often put other people’s needs before our own. We often work too many hours, skimp out on sleep, don’t exercise enough and make poor food choices. What does this lead to? Poor health, a lack of energy, and increased stress on the body and mind – all leading to an increased the risk of illness and disease. The reality is the time you’re giving away is going to be taken away from your life – in fatigue, illness, and disease. The key is balance, to give back and do for yourself as much if not more than you do for others.
Learn To Say No
Saying no to others is saying yes to yourself. Think of times when others said no to you. Did you understand? I totally understand when I’m said no to, and admire that ability in people, for I see that they have to take of their needs and self first. You have a choice – don’t always feel like you have to be a people pleaser and say yes to everyone.
Combine Activities
Try to think of creative ways to accomplish a few tasks together. For example, say you want to spend more time together as a family and want to get in more exercise. Go for walks together or a family bike ride. Want to spend time with friends and need to get grocery shopping and cooking done? Go to the store with a friend and cook healthy meals together.
Make Time for Yourself
Schedule time for yourself and stick to it. Make sure to get regular exercise and schedule times to unwind and relax as well – whether it’s a night out with friends, a massage or a yoga class. You need time to yourself to de-stress and re-energize yourself so you can stay healthy and productive.
Sleep
Without adequate sleep, you won’t have much energy or motivation to do anything. Lack of sleep increases the stress on your body and mind, and compromises your immune system. Sleep is crucial – for it’s one of the easiest and best ways to preserve and restore your body, and keep it healthy.
